4TH FESTIVAL OF GERMAN CINEMA IN CHINA

CHINA, 2016

This year’s line-up includes international successes like COLONIA by Academy Award-winning director Florian Gallenberger; renowned auteur Doris Dörrie’s Berlinale entry GRÜSSE AUS FUKUSHIMA (international title: Fukushima, Mon Amour) Lars Kraume’s DER STAAT GEGEN FRITZ BAUER (The People vs. Fritz Bauer), which won the audience award at the Locarno Film Festival; DER NACHTMAHR by Akiz, which captivated festival-goers in Locarno, Toronto und Zürich; and Andreas Gruber’s HANNAS SCHLAFENDE HUNDE (Hanna’s Sleepings Dogs), which won the award for best screenplay at this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival.

The up-and-coming generation of German women filmmakers are also making their mark: Aline Fischer’s METEORSTRASSE (Meteor Street), Theresa von Eltz’s 4 KÖNIGE (4 Kings) and Cordula Kablitz-Post’s LOU ANDREAS-SALOMÉ go to show that women directors don’t need quotas to show the world what they’re capable of.

A Rainer Werner Fassbinder retrospective and Fritz Lang’s silent film DER MÜDE TOD (Destiny) epitomize the strength of German film history, as graphically documented in FRITZ LANG, a new feature by Gordian Maugg.

We’re delighted that so many filmmakers will be travelling to China this year to discuss their work with the public in various cities: Florian Gallenberger, Theresa von Eltz and Daniel Carsenty, Aline Fischer, Cordula Kablitz-Post and Juliane Lorenz will make for quite a strong delegation indeed.

We hope viewers will enjoy two exciting and moving weeks of fine German films and rousing discussion!

GREETINGS FROM MICHAEL CLAUSS THE GERMAN AMBASSADOR TO CHINA

On 21 March 2016, German Federal President Joachim Gauck and Chinese President Xi Jinping opened the “German-Chinese Year of School and Youth Exchange” in a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People. Against this background, I am particularly pleased to see that this year’s Festival of German Cinema focuses on the topic of coming-of-age. Friendship, love and leaving home are emotional challenges that teenagers around the world can relate to.

The Festival of German Cinema in China is growing up as well: This year, we are witnessing its 4th edition. The festival has established itself and is now an integral part of German cultural activities in China. It helps Germany to raise its profile in China and to convey a multifaceted picture of life in our country.

The second focus of the festival is on the issue of flight and migration. The refugee crisis in Europe is closely monitored and discussed here in China. The festival makes an important contribution to this discourse by providing a platform for the different perspectives of German filmmakers on the subject.

The variety and timeliness of the films selected by German Films, the Goethe-Institut and their partners are evidence of the vitality, creativity and productivity of the German film industry. Supported by the Federal Government, German filmmakers demonstrate how the cinema can depict, interpret and shape social developments.

I thank German Films, the Goethe-Institut and all other partners who contributed to the 4th Festival of German Cinema in China. And most importantly: a warm welcome to all our viewers and participants in Beijing, Chengdu and Shenzhen!

GREETINGS FROM FLORIAN GALLENBERGER HONORARY PATRON OF THE FESTIVAL

Every film takes us on a journey into the fictional reality of its story. It may be a journey into the past or the future, to a faraway place, maybe even a voyage beyond reality to a fantasy world or into the inner world of the protagonist’s thoughts and emotions.

“Travel broadens the mind!” as they say. That goes for cinematic travels as well, which tell us something not only about the filmmakers, but also about their times and the world they are from, for you can tell where a traveller is from by the way they travel.

But what about when it’s the films that do the travelling? When we show German films in China? Do these films elicit the same reactions in Chinese viewers as in a German audience? Do our Chinese fellow travellers understand the stories just as we do, especially what remains unsaid and is only hinted at, what can only be put together in the viewer’s mind?

This will certainly be one of the most exciting aspects of this German film festival in China, but only of course if our Chinese friends turn out in large numbers for the screenings and we can talk about the films afterwards. I’m looking forward to that in particular!

On that note, I’d like to extend a cordial invitation to come to the festival! Travel with us! Let’s form a Sino-German tour group and share our impressions, thoughts and questions with one another. What could be finer than that?
